This Old Factory Cart

There’s a story about the factory cart pictured above, but I’ll get to that in a minute. So…what’s SO special about these early 1900’s old factory carts anyways. Well for me it’s pretty simple as it seems to be for a lot of people. Beyond the fact that they just look great, it’s the idea of re-purposing something once useful into something presently useful that has a lot of history that has such a magnetic charm. Whether you keep the original rustic wood top or add something new for a top like a granite or limestone slab or a tempered 3/8” glass top so you can see the restored inside as well (looks awesome BTW) the interesting contrast between wood and cast iron just is kinda like a functional old sculpture.

So, the story for the factory cart in the pictures above started the usual way. We were referred to the designer by a friend who did extensive work at the property and asked if we’d be interested in re-conditioning an old factory cart for the clients use – this is where it got a little different – to be used outdoors by the fireplace near the pool. “Uhhhmmm, Ya…I would love to work with you on that” said I. Before I could say it they suggested IPE but only to replace the top at first. “It would be better to do the whole thing in IPE actually so it weathers the same, and I promise it will look amazing”, said I. “Sounds great”, said they. So there we were, about to do our first OUTDOOR factory cart. It was a crazy good idea especially when after a site visit and short tour I was filled in on the yet to be completed flagstone pool decking, IPE feature path and timber frame pergola, not to mention the now partly finished natural stone wall and 16’+ foot high limestone slab fireplace. I knew this area was going to be so great and well, it really turned out even better. And our humble little part of that awesome space fits in so well…like a glove!

So we got to work on the cart… We stripped it of its original old wood top which was in really bad shape and sides which were in the usual average condition and replaced all the wood for the tops and sides/frame with IPE. Honestly, I didn’t want to hand it over it was so beautiful. It sits now in front of the stunning outdoor fireplace. The owners of the gorgeous home graciously let me show off this one of a kind factory cart coffee table on location…thanks Katie and Walt.

Frankly, today’s throw away mentality really bugs me – a lot –  but thanks to people with the ability to see beyond what something IS to what it COULD BE – these well-designed relics of the past live again, a beautiful mixture of colors and textures and function that fit so many home decor styles…hey maybe that’s why you see them everywhere.
